29th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A (Green).
Isaiah has God calling Cyrus by name - a foreign king who does not know him - and using him anyway, because there is no other God to share the work with. That is the claim the whole day rests on: the Lord is not one power among many but the only one, and every other authority is on loan. So when the Pharisees try to catch Jesus between Caesar and God, the trap has already closed on them. He asks for a coin, points at the face stamped on it, and tells them to give Caesar back his own small thing. The sentence turns on the half nobody expected: give God what belongs to God. The coin carries Caesar's likeness, but we carry God's, and that settles what we owe. The tax is a detail; ourselves are the point. Paul saw it happening in Thessalonica and called it work of faith, labour of love, endurance in hope - a whole life handed over, which is the only coin God ever asked for.
